One thing I need to adjust (WW #151)

Get Clear. Take Action. Win Where It's Worthy

Good morning!

I have a confession to make to y’all that is born out of two harsh time realities in front of me at the moment. You may or may not be dealing with both, but you are for sure dealing with at least one of them. The realities:

  1. Summer is more than halfway over in our house. Six weeks have flown by and there are four weeks left which will surely go just as quickly.
  2. 2026 is more than 50% done. In fact, there are twenty-four weeks remaining til we turn the page on this year.

I’m saying these are harsh realities because I keep wondering,

“Where did the time go?”

It doesn’t feel like six months have already gone by…

But there has been a lot going on in my world in the first half of the year and much of it feels like a blur. Nothing bad per se has happened. In fact, there are a lot of really amazing things to be celebrating. It just feels like it’s moving so fast - and all I know is that I don’t want to lose at things I’ve said are really important to me, my Worthy Wins.

A few weeks back I paused to reflect on the first half of the year and it painted a picture with plenty of good things, but a few I didn’t love. On the outside of my life, you wouldn’t sense this or know these things existed, but stepping back to review the previous six months showed some gaps.

Before I share one of the biggest gaps I realized, I want to say something really important: this is not about shame or guilt. This is not about performance for the sake of performance. This is not about comparison.

My gap is about what I said was important as I looked ahead to 2026. And the midway point is a great time to look back and assess whether my trajectory is taking me towards the Worthy Wins I said I wanted to go after.

AM I RUNNING TO WIN?

There’s a verse in Paul’s first letter to the people in Corinth that highlights what I’m getting at.

“Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize.” - 1 Corinthians 9:24

Every one of us is running a race. But there isn’t a participation trophy for being in the race. Winning requires intention.

Am I running the race in such a way to get Worthy Wins?

I’m trying and there are some good signs, but my reflection time showed I needed to recalibrate a few parts of my race plan.

So, here’s my confession: I don’t know the last time I took one of my kids on a 1:1 date.

But I’ve said that is something I want to do on a monthly basis. I know they are an important part of getting Worthy Wins for me. Not because I have to earn their love or because 1:1 dates are mandatory to be a good parent, but because I know that consistent 1:1 time with each of our boys sets trajectory for having a strong relationship with them - which is a Worthy Win for me.

No dates in recent memory shows me the trajectory is not positive. And that I’m not running the race to get the prize. So, I need to make a simple adjustment - get the dates on the calendar and follow through on doing them each month.

ADJUSTING THE TRAJECTORY

I don’t know how your year is going, but I do know that now is a perfect time to reflect on the trajectory and make some adjustments. It only takes a few minutes to assess and adjust the plant to pursuit your own Worthy Wins.

So here’s a simple exercise to help you. For now I’ll call it the WWT - The Worthy Wins Trajectory exercise.

For each relationship that you’ve declared to be most important to you, answer these questions:

  1. ONE WORD INTENTION: What is one word that describes what you want to be true about that relationship at the end of the year?
  2. TRAJECTORY: At this point in the year, is the trajectory of your one word intention currently - headed UP, DOWN, or NEUTRAL?
  3. ONE CONSISTENT ACTION: Regardless of your answer to #2, what is one consistent action you can commit to that would ensure you’re lined up towards your one word intention being true at the end of the year? This is all about trajectory change. Small actions done consistently alter trajectory for the long haul. Whether it’s something small to keep things going up or one major adjustment to course correct, this one consistent action will impact how the year ends.

Bonus points: Share this with a friend and help encourage each other on trajectory for the second half of the year.

Rooting for you.

Much love,

JO

Get Clear. Take Action. Win Where It's Worthy Good morning! I recently read this note from Mike Foster, where he talked about asking his wife two very important questions: How would you rate me as a husband on a scale of 1-10? How could I go up ONE point? Woah. Really cool questions - and extremely vulnerable. Newsflash: I normally like these types of questions because I want to win in the end when it comes to my marriage. Understanding how Erin would rate me right now and how I could go up...

Get Clear. Take Action. Win Where It's Worthy Hi friends, I had an usual experience last week as I listened to a podcast... My eyes welled up and I couldn't stop the tears from flowing. 🥺 And that specific podcast led me back to a resounding question I have to keep asking myself - and that I want to ask you as well… “Are you living like you’re running out of time?” It’s not a new question or idea for me. I’ve thought about this question A LOT over the last few years. I do believe the people...

Get Clear. Take Action. Win Where It's Worthy Good morning! Have you ever been driving and cut it close on refilling before completely running out? If you’ve ever done that or gotten close you’ll know that today’s modern cars will go from telling you the exact mileage you have left (ie 10 miles) to empty to just saying, “Low Fuel.” It’s basically the final warning that you are about to run out of gas. And when you get into that “Low Fuel” zone, you’re playing with fire. It’s a giant risk....
